How Does Baking Soda Help Your Teeth?
Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, is mildly alkaline. This means it can help neutralize some of the acids produced when bacteria in dental plaque feed on sugars and starches. Acids draw minerals out of tooth enamel and contribute to tooth decay.
Reducing acidity may make the mouth less favourable to the cavity-causing process, but it does not eliminate the risk of decay or rebuild weakened enamel in the same way fluoride can.
Baking Soda vs. Fluoride
Baking soda and fluoride serve different purposes in toothpaste. Baking soda mainly helps clean the teeth and manage acidity, while fluoride directly strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities.
Is Baking Soda Toothpaste a Good Choice?
Baking soda toothpaste can be a good option when it contains fluoride and meets your other oral health needs. Some people enjoy the clean feeling it provides, while others may find its flavour or texture less appealing.

Can baking soda heal a cavity?
Baking soda cannot repair a cavity once a hole has formed in the tooth. Fluoride may help reverse very early mineral loss before a cavity develops, but established decay requires dental treatment.
Should you brush with just baking soda?
Plain baking soda is not a substitute for toothpaste because it lacks fluoride and other ingredients that support oral health. Brushing aggressively with any abrasive product can also contribute to enamel wear or gum irritation. For the benefits of baking soda, choose a formulated baking soda toothpaste instead of brushing with kitchen powder.
Does baking soda toothpaste contain fluoride?
